At least three gunmen opened fire brutally during a massive gathering in Washington, United States on Sunday (9 August 2020) morning local time.
The incident killed a teenager and injured 20 others, including a police officer.
The shooting occurred during a meeting attended by hundreds of people in the southeastern district of the nation’s capital, DC Metropolitan Police Chief Peter Newsham and Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said at a news conference.
Local media described the event as a “party without permission” in a residential area. Bowser said the event violated a city ban on Coronavirus health protocols which prohibits public gatherings of more than 50 people.
“We cannot tolerate this kind of gathering in our city during COVID-19. It is too dangerous,” he added.
Newsham said the three shooters opened fire during the dispute around 12:20 am local time.
They attacked 21 people, including a police officer who was not on duty.
Meanwhile, the one who was killed was Christopher Brown (17), who was pronounced dead at the local hospital.
There were no details about the suspected shooter. Various weapons, including a pistol, were confiscated from the scene, Newsham said.
