Today, Mount Sinabung in Karo Regency, North Sumatra erupted again. During this eruption, Sinabung has spewed volcanic ash as high as 5,000 meters and causing the city of Berastagi to darken.
A resident who lives on Air street, Berastagi City, Karo, named Chandra, revealed that Sinabung’s volcanic ash covered the area where he lives.
“The Sinabung’s volcanic ash makes the city of Berastagi turn dark, even the solar cell lights automatically turn on due to the darkness of the Berastagi area,” Chandra said on Monday, August 10, 2020.
Chandra also revealed that the condition had occurred since 10.45 morning, local times.
Currently, the condition of residents in the area of Air Street has fled to their relative’s homes, and some of them choose to stay in their homes.
“The situation very bad. Sinabung’s volcanic ash is very thick,” he said.
Another resident, who also lives on Air Street, Bobby said, the thick of volcanic ash caused the road around Berastagi to be closed, after many road users were disturbed.
The head of The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) , Armen Putra explained, Mt. Before, Mt. Sinabung also erupted with a volcanic ash height of 2,000 meters on Saturday, August 8, 2020. The first eruption was at 01.58 local times, and volcanic ash was distributed in several sub-districts in Karo Regency.
Then in the afternoon at 17:18 local times, Mt. Sinabung erupted again by releasing volcanic ash about 1,000 meters away.
“The level of seismicity in Mt. Sinabung is still increasing, and there is a potential for further eruptions to occur. The status of Mt. Sinabung is still on Alert Level III,” he said.
Sinabung roared back to life in 2010 after being dormant for 400 years. After another period of inactivity, it erupted once more in 2013 and has remained highly active since.
