The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) urges the public not to use exhaust masks or masks that have vents and valves.

According to the CDC, the use of an exhaust mask allows the air inside the mask that might have a virus in it to be blown out through the valve hole.

A pulmonologist from Friendship Hospital, Dr. Erlang Samoedro, SpP, confirmed that exhaust masks were not effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19.
In fact, according to him, this type of mask if used can actually endanger others.
“If someone is confirmed to have COVID-19 then wear this mask, it’s the same as not wearing a mask.”
“He is protected from external threats, but instead threatens people outside,” said Dr. Erlang to detikcom, Friday (14 August 2020).
Meanwhile, a pulmonologist from Friendship Hospital, Dr. Diah Handayani, SpP, also explained the possibility of the CDC banning the use of exhaust masks because it anticipates the risk of airborne transmission of COVID-19.
Moreover, the risk of transmitting COVID-19 in this way has been warned by the World Health Organization (WHO).
