As it is known, the COVID-19 virus was found to have mutated from the type that first appeared in Wuhan, China.
The new mutation is said to be the most contagious among all the mutations found.
Malaysian health authorities reported that the mutation was detected in Malaysia, this was announced on Sunday (16 August 2020).
This mutation was found by the Malaysian Institute of Medical Research from four cases between the two COVID-19 groups or clusters in Malaysia.
“The Sivagangga group and the Ulu Tiram group,” said Health Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah in Sunday, quoted by The Straits Times.
According to Datuk Dr Hisham, the discovery of the most contagious mutation of the Corona virus meant that people had to be more careful.
Especially in undergoing health protocols such as maintaining distance and requiring the use of masks.
“It was found to be 10 times more infectious and easily spread by individual ‘super-spreaders’,” said Dr Hisham, speaking of the type of Corona mutation.
He said further tests would be carried out on other cases and clusters.
He explained that the D614G mutation was discovered by scientists in July 2020 and could render vaccine development ineffective against new strains.
Even so, he noted that swift action by Malaysian public health authorities had been taken.
Rapid action continues to be taken to control the spread of the Corona virus from the affected groups.
Malaysia itself reported 26 new cases on Saturday, bringing the total number of infections reported to 9,175.
