Twenty-eight trillion tons of ice disappeared from the earth’s surface from 1994 to 2017, or in less than 30 years.
It is a rather dire conclusion from research conducted by scientists from various universities in England.
Quoted from the Guardian, they conducted a survey of Earth’s poles, mountains, and glaciers from satellite images, to measure how much ice is melting because of global warming that is triggered by greenhouse gas emissions.
They say the worrying conclusion indicates that rising sea levels, caused by melting glaciers and ice, could later reach one meter.
If the estimate is correct, then the coastal communities are in danger.
Melting ice in large quantities can also interfere with the planet’s ability to reflect solar radiation into space so that the earth can be even warmer.
Until now, ice melting has continued. They believe the cause is climate change.
