Tragic, a man from Pakistan named Asif Pervaiz has been sentenced to die for blasphemy on Tuesday. Blasphemy laws in Pakistan have often been applied to punish minorities or other Muslims as a means of revenge, noted human rights groups.
The Christian man who works in a factory was sentenced to be hanged after his supervisor accused him of defamatory text messages regarding the Muslim prophet Mohammed.
As cited from Deutsche Welle, the 37-year-old defendant was ordered to be hanged by his neck until death.
Pakistan, a country of more than 210 million inhabitants, more than 95 % of the citizens practice Islam. So, makes an insulting remark about Mohammed carries a mandatory death penalty.
For that punishment, the lawyer of Pervaiz, Saif-ul-Malook, told that he would appeal the ruling because he has already spent seven years awaiting the court’s decision.
Malook said, “This case should have been thrown out by the judge”
Not only has been sentenced to die, but Pervaiz also fined the equivalent of USD 300.
Initially, Pervaiz testified that his supervisor lobbed the accusation only after he refused an Islamic conversion.
