Saba Sahar is recovering in hospital after being shot several times.
Minutes after Saba Sahar left her home in Kabul, her husband heard gunshots.
“He answered the phone and told me to come as soon as possible. He said he was shot,” Emal Zaki told the BBC.
Emal Zaki, Saba Sahar’s husband, was the first to be on the scene and found his wife crouched by the wall where he and his bodyguards were trying to fend off the attackers.
She has been shot several times but is still alive. Zakipun bundled her into a car and was rushed to the hospital.
Ms. Sahar is one of Afghanistan’s first female film directors.
Fiction and real life are intertwined for her at times, as she has starred in and helped produce a TV series about the Afghan police.
She also held high-level roles with the police and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Now, his situation is getting better at the hospital.
Her husband believes she has been targeted because of her work promoting women’s rights.
“Those who raise women’s voices always risk being targeted,” said Zaki.
Under the Taliban rule in the 1990s, women were not allowed to attend school or work.
The attack on Saba Sahar is one of a number of assassination attempts that have taken place in Kabul in recent months, often targeting prominent figures.
In many cases, including the shooting of Sahar, the Taliban have denied responsibility, but no other militant group has admitted involvement.
