Researchers from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, in partnership with the Dutch airline, KLM.
They tested the futuristic model, measuring 22.5 kg and measuring three meters, at a manned air base in Germany, where they worked with the Airbus team to test takeoff, maneuverability, approach and landing.
Roelof Vos, assistant professor in the faculty of aerospace engineering at Delft University of Technology, who led the project explained that they feared the plane would have problems taking off, because based on their calculations, there appeared to be a problem with ‘rotation’.
“The team optimized the scaled flight model to prevent the problem, but the pudding proved to be in the food. You have to fly to know for sure, “he added.
Fortunately, they managed to take off at a speed of 80 km / h, and all other aspects including flight speed, angle and thrust were as planned.
There, of course, still remains work to be done to fine-tune the plane before it can officially carry passengers, but the team is determined to use the data gathered from flight tests to make repairs for future testing.
