Samsung Electro-Mechanics says it has developed the world’s smallest power inductor.
The inductor measuring 0.8 mm wide, 0.65 mm thick, and 0.4 mm long is a decrease in size from the previous smallest product which was 1.2 mm wide and 1 mm long.
The power inductor is the component required to supply stable electricity from the battery to the semiconductor.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics intends to supply its own tiny power inductor to global smartphone manufacturers trying to make smaller and lighter devices.
The South Korea-based company, part of the Samsung Group, said it was able to reduce the size of its power inductors by applying material technology.
Instead of producing power inductors in units themselves, Samsung Electro-Mechanics says they produce them in substrate units.
According to them, it allows the company to have better productivity.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics has been manufacturing inductors since 1996.
With the advent of 5G telecommunications and wearables, the company says the demand for small power inductors will increase rapidly, with use of such products expected to grow by at least 20 percent.
