A recent study from China reports that people who wear glasses every day may be at lower risk of being infected with the Corona COVID-19 virus.
The study was published in JAMA Ophthalmology on September 16.
According to Dr. Yiping Wei, one of the researchers from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University, the use of glasses can prevent our hands from touching our eyes frequently.
In addition, glasses also have the potential to protect the risk of spreading COVID-19 through droplets.
The reason is, the droplets that come out of someone’s mouth when talking will not be splashed directly into the eyes.
Even so, there needs to be further research to prove the correctness of the results of this study.
Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai South Nassau, Dr Aaron Glatt said that currently many hospitals require health workers and visitors to wear glasses or face shields with masks, including in the hospital where he works.
“People often ask, ‘if I wear glasses is that enough?’ And our answer is no, “said Glatt.
“Glasses may provide some protection, but obviously airborne particles would theoretically easily enter the eye through the vicinity of the glasses,” he explained.
Therefore, various kinds of health protocols, such as the use of masks, routine hand washing, and maintaining distance must be implemented to optimize protection from the risk of COVID-19 infection.
