Cemal Metin Avci killed his girlfriend and doused her dead body in petrol and set her alight. At that time, he lying and telling his young brother named Mertcan Avci, that he was burning meat, because his refrigerator in his bar was broke.
The 32 years old suspected is accused of beating and strangling his partner named Pinar Gultekin, 27, to death. Pinar Gultekin is a feminist, a prominent campaigner to stop violence against women in her country.
From the investigation, detectives have arrested the accused’s brother because, he was reportedly linked to the case through mobile phone evidence. Because, homicide police tracked signals from the scene in the wake of Pinar’s disappearance on July 16, 2020.
But, Mertcan said that he only recalled smelling a disgusting odour, when he arrived at the scene in Mentese, Turkey. But, his brother said that he was ridding of spoiled meat after his fridge broke.
He claims his brother allegedly phoned family members on the night and is accused of going to the scene with him to cover up evidence.
Politicians and celebrities have condemned the crime and a campaign has also started on Instagram, dubbed ChallengeAccepted.
Now, Mertcan Avci is also in preventive detention alongside his brother, Cemal Metin Avci who was arrested on July 21.
Cemal Metin Avci, married father-of-one is being held in solitary confinement at a high-security prison.
