India’s move to ban several applications from China has drawn a rebuke from the Bamboo Curtain country government. It makes relations between the two countries even hotter.
“We are firmly against the repeated use of the Indian side of ‘national security’ as an excuse to ban some mobile apps with a Chinese background,” said Ji Rong, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in India as quoted by CNN, Friday, November 27, 2020.
India blocked 43 applications, many of which are in Chinese.
Some of the apps from Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba include shopping platform AliExpress, messaging app DingTalk and streaming Taobao Live. Alibaba has not yet commented on this incident
“This action is taken based on input regarding this application to engage in activities that are detrimental to India’s sovereignty integrity, Indian defense, state security, and public order,” India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy said the country has always obliged Chinese companies operating overseas to comply with international rules and comply with local laws
Indian officials have banned more than 200 apps, which were mostly China applications include TikTok.
Relations between India and China have become tenuous since deadly border clashes in June. The incident killed 20 Indian soldiers.
