There are people who cannot sleep in the dark, but others have to turn off the lights.
But, ideally, the lights should be turned off during sleep to stimulate the production of melatonin, a hormone in the brain that regulates sleep cycles and quality.
Melatonin will be higher when you are in the dark. This condition will make the body feel relaxed, so you can sleep soundly and the sleep quality is maintained.
On the other hand, the hormone will decrease if there is a bright light. Your sleep is also of poor quality.
Besides getting better and better quality sleep, sleeping with the lights off also brings several other benefits as follows :
- Improve memory
When you sleep soundly, the body will rest while the brain will move actively to improve the inter-nerve connections which will make your memory better in the future. - Reduce stress
When your body lacks rest, this condition can cause insomnia and an increase in blood pressure. And if it happens continuously, stress makes you vulnerable to heart disease and stroke. - Prevent cancer
Turning off the lights while sleeping can also prevent breast cancer and colon cancer. According to research, the production of melatonin in an appropriate portion can prevent the development of tumor cells that lead to cancer. - Reducing the risk of heart disease
Lack of sleep is associated with increased blood pressure and cholesterol, which makes you prone to heart disease and stroke. Especially if you often sleep less than 7-9 hours every day. - Repair the body cell
By turning off the lights, helps you to repair cells that damaged by exposure of ultraviolet rays, stress, as well as pollution, and other substances that are detrimental to health.
Your body also produces more protein when you are asleep. Protein is the foundation for healthy cells to repair the defects.
