A resident of Sungai Guntung, Kateman Subdistrict, Indragiri Hilir (Inhil) Regency, Riau, with the initials AZ, was detained by the police.
The 38-year-old man was caught on a CCTV camera destroying a glass cabinet inside the Al-Fallah River Guntung Mosque.
The Head of Inhil Police, AKBP Dian Setyawan, explained that the incident started at 10.30 WIB when a witness was cleaning the mosque in preparation for midday prayers.
“He saw the glass cabinet containing the Koran fall to the floor with broken glass scattered about, without feeling suspicious that the witness cleaned the glass shards and then informed the mosque management,” explained the Police Chief.
Then around 16.00 WIB, the mosque management opened CCTV to find out the cause of the incident.
“From CCTV, known from the recording at 09.30 WIB, a perpetrator entered from the back door and immediately dropped the glass cabinet and then left the mosque,” continued the Police Chief.
Then the mosque management reported the incident to the Kateman Police.
“The Kapolsek Kateman and the Criminal Investigation Unit conducted an investigation and obtained information about the characteristics of the perpetrator and using a black motorbike. Based on the results, the alleged perpetrator detain with evidence in his house. The perpetrator’s motive was in the influence of drugs,” he said.
The articles suspected by the alleged perpetrator were 156 an of the Criminal Code concerning religious blasphemy (threat of 5 years sentence) and 406 KUHP concerning the destruction of property (punishment of 2 years and 8 months).
