An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 again occurred in Majene Regency, West Sulawesi Province.
“This earthquake was felt in the Majene III MMI Regency area and based on the modeling there is no potential for a tsunami,” said Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Raditya Jati in his statement, Saturday, January 16.
The epicenter was 20 kilometers northeast of Majene and a depth of 10 kilometers. In addition, there is no information on the impact of the aftershock.
“The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts aftershocks will still occur. For this reason, BNPB urges the public to remain calm and always be vigilant regarding the potential for aftershocks of significant magnitude,” he explained.
Raditya also appealed to the public to be careful. Especially for those who live in hilly areas to be aware of landslides.
Meanwhile, people living in coastal areas are asked to immediately move away from the beach in case of a further aftershock.
The public can also follow the development of seismic information through the BMKG and the InaRisk portal to find out the potential disaster risks that exist near their homes.
“People are asked to be able to follow official information and do not easily believe any information with unclear sources,” he said.
“People are also advised not to believe fake news or hoaxes regarding predictions and predictions of earthquakes that will occur with greater power and a tsunami will occur,” continued Raditya.
