Mick Schumacher faces an extremely difficult task living up to his father’s name in the Formula One world.
Schumacher, 21, is gearing up for his first season in F1 after signing a multi-year contract with Haas ahead of the 2021 campaign.
The German, who is the son of racing legend Michael, is set to partner Nikita Mazepin as part of a new-look line-up for Guenther Steiner’s team this term.
He has spent six years plying his trade down in the lower championships, claiming F2 and F3 titles before making the step up to the top flight.
It has been suggested that Mick’s iconic surname will make it easier for him to climb through the F1 ranks with speed before reaching the summit like his father.
However, ex-driver Jan Lammers believes the weight of that name and constant comparisons with Michael will make it tough for the youngster as he tries to establish his own reputation in F1.
“Mick is a slow starter, someone who gets there slowly. But in the end, he definitely has quality, otherwise, you won’t win championships in Formula 3 and Formula 2. That name makes it even more difficult. In a way, it could be a bit easier, but to really perform – with all eyes on you and constantly comparing with your father – that is extremely difficult. I think it’s impressive how he’s already dealing with that,” he told the Dutch branch of Motorsport.com.
Mick’s dad Michael, who has not been seen publicly since the devastating 2013 skiing accident which left him in a medically-induced coma, is one of the greatest drivers of all time.
He holds the joint-record for most ever F1 world title wins, with Lewis Hamilton equalling his tally last season.
