There’s much to be said about what makes Nyepi, or the Day of Silence, so special in Bali, but one would be remiss not to mention the gorgeous hazy band of light appearing in the night sky, which was particularly stunning this year.
The negligible light pollution during Nyepi on Sunday, as people were supposed to keep their lights low and unseen from the outside, paved the way for an uninterrupted dark canvas where the stars shone their brightest.
“During Nyepi, no lights were on. So the atmosphere was really clean and the sky clear,” Iman Faturahman, an official from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.
Many people have since taken to social media to share their snaps of the gorgeous Milky Way galaxy (a tiny portion of it, at least), with the photos and videos appearing to have been taken between Sunday night and the early hours of Monday.
