A 25-year-old Russian man stole several helmets while he was allegedly blackout drunk. And his story went viral last weekend and has been widely circulating in Bali.
The story began with CCTV footage showing a man in white entering the parking lot of a villa in Pererenan, Badung regency.
The man drove his motorbike and parked it out of sight, before slowly returning to the lot and grabbing two helmets that were placed on top of a parked motorbike, and then he walked back to his vehicle. The clip was quickly reshared across social media platforms. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning.
Ketut Wiwin Wirahadi heads the general crimes unit at Mengwi sub-precinct, said that Police got involved after two people filed a report about the missing helmets, and the man has since been identified as IK, who’s a Russian national.
“The thief stole helmets while he was depressed and stressed, and under the influence of alcohol because he was brokenhearted and living alone in Bali,” Wiwin said.
Police reportedly went in search of the perpetrator on Saturday, and IK was quick to apologize to authorities and the victims, saying that he did not intend to steal.
He also apologized for the incident in a video. “I was drunk, very drunk. I don’t remember. When I woke up I realized I brought all the helmets, I’m sorry. It’s the first time in my life,” IK said.
Police are not pursuing the case any further as the helmet owners and IK have agreed that the matter was resolved.
