The fierce waves of the beaches south of Jogja often make people shudder and reluctant to approach.
The waves that come chasing from the direction of the wide ocean seem to be racing to drive us away so that we don’t get close to the water. Unlike the beaches on the northern side of Java which are friendlier, this land bank that directly greets the vastness of the Indian Ocean is not the right place to enjoy the fun of swimming in saltwater or the thrill of snorkeling to witness the beauty of the underwater panorama with small fish. Until we are forced to be content playing water on the edge, where the ocean bubbles are starting to disappear.
Passing through the sea pandanus hedge (Pandanus tectorius), we arrived at the shoreline. A group of young people in bright orange life jackets complete with other snorkel equipment, looked enthusiastic and couldn’t wait to swim and dive in the shallow waters.
The Nglambor Beach area is one of the snorkeling destinations on the southern coast of Jogja which has a stunning panoramic view of the seabed with a variety of coral reefs and marine life.
The Sergeant Major, Jambrong, and several other small fish are permanent residents who are seen frequently swimming in groups or playing hide and seek in crevices in coral reefs.
This beautiful scenery covered by waves is very much guarded by the people around Nglambor Beach. Even this coastal area is an area for the cultivation of several types of fish as well as a conservation location for coral reefs and other marine biotas.
The tradition of the Ngalangi sea alms ceremony is also carried out on this beach. “Ngalangi” in Javanese means blocking or prohibiting. The community around Nglambor beach prohibits anyone from fishing in the coastal area except once a year, outside the fish spawning season. The fishing procession can only be done using gawar, a kind of net from the root of the wawar tree which is fixed and driven together into the sea by the local community.
As if not to be outdone, nature also maintains and maintains the beauty of this universal aquarium by ordering two giant tortoise corals to patrol the coast. With gallant “Watu Kalong” and “Watu Kuntul” tame the fierce waves so as not to hit the shore too hard. The existence of these two giant turtle corals makes the coral reefs of Nglambor Beach not damaged by the waves, as well as safe for snorkeling.
The remains of the tamed south beach waves give a special sensation when snorkeling at Nglambor Beach.
Nglambor Beach with all its residents has spoiled the eyes with all its enchanting natural make-up. As connoisseurs, there is nothing wrong with us taking part in preserving it, together with the local community lighten the task of two giant tortoise corals.
After joking and taking pictures with the fish, the shady rocks on the south side of the beach are the target to take a break, enjoy the sea breeze while drying clothes. There is a source of freshwater that gushes from a small rock gap. The phenomenon of freshwater that appears on Nglambor Beach is apparently due to a karst tunnel resembling a U pipe which functions as a groundwater channel.
Lulled by the gust of the beach breeze, we didn’t realize the sun was getting higher and the clothes that had been wet had dried up.
