Sometimes, even if you’re just sitting next to each other while silently typing on your own laptops, when all you need is a writing buddy to get some work done.
For those among us who enjoy writing with company, there’s a new and open space in Ubud that might just be what you’re looking for.
Amen Bar, the name of which is blended from the words ruAng MENulis BAReng, which is Indonesian for “a space to write together,” opened up just this month to serve as a place for writers to sit and get work done (or just daydream for inspiration).
The owner of Amen Bar Valiant Budi told with many co-working spaces closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns surrounding air circulation in indoor spots, Valiant decided to use the extra space in his home to finally realize his dream of a space for writers to write together.
“It started with me looking for a place that has a good view, trees, sunset , where you can bring your own bekel (Indonesian for packed lunch) and not having to order food or drink. In Bali there are a few favorites for co-working spaces, but for me who really just needs a place to write and not an internet connection — the fees are much too high. Plus, you can’t bring your own snack,” he sai.
This space is dreamy.
Ubud’s greeneries are right there to serve as your inspiration. You can enjoy your packed lunches with a view, as you write down your next great idea.
Amen Bar is open at least once a week from 1pm to 5 pm, with their flexible hours depending on Valiant’s personal schedule.
Those who want to visit should send Amen Bar a message on Instagram beforehand to reserve a spot, as Valiant limits the number of visitors to eight people to ensure sufficient social distancing.
There’s also a private room for those who want a little more privacy.
Amen Bar is located right next to Fu Shou Noodle Club, and you’re welcome to order a take-away from there and enjoy it next door.
If you’re wondering how much this is going to cost you, Valiant accepts donations of any amount, and says it doesn’t even have to be money. On one of Amen Bar’s Instagram posts, Valiant wrote payment can come in the form of books, stationery, plants, or even a prayer.
