Kuto Besak Fortress is located at Sultan Mahmud Badarudin street, 19 Ilir, Bukit Kecil, Palembang, Palembang City, South Sumatra. Benteng Kuto Besak or BKB, is a sturdy and magnificent building located on the bank of the Musi River.
The fort, which is made of 10 meters high stone, stands firmly in the middle of Palembang city.
Historically, Kuto Besak Fortress is a palace that building in the 18th century which became the center of the Palembang Sultanate. This fort was built in 1780 on the initiative of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I who ruled in 1724-1758, then completed by his successor, Sultan Mahmud Bahauddin who ruled in 1776-1803.
The cement in the adhesive for the fort brick used limestone around the inland area of the Ogan River mixed with egg white. The courtyard area in front of the Kuto Besak Fortress was arranged in such a way by the city government of Palembang, to become a plaza, aka the square, which can be used by tourists for their activities.
This fort has 3 entrances in 3 cardinal directions, namely the east, west, and south doors.
Sometimes this tourist spot is also the location for organizing events or festivals with an entertainment stage set in the enchanting Musi River and Ampera Bridge.
When night falls, the Kuto Besak Fortress area is filled with night market traders selling their wares.
You can hunt for typical culinary here, in the form of Pempek, or various other types of street food that are no less delicious.
The atmosphere will feel more dramatic because the light from the rows of garden lights creates a yellow reflection on the river surface. You can also see and enjoy the view of the Ampera Bridge which looks magnificent decorated with colorful lights.
