Beringharjo is indeed famous for its center of batik fabrics and clothes at low prices. However, it turns out that this market does not only sell fabrics and clothes, you know. This place is also a paradise for foodies.
So, for those of you who are tired all day of sightseeing or shopping, you can recharge by stopping by for a meal at the Beringharjo Market.
- ES DAWET MBAH DAY
Every time they ask where Mbah Hari usually opens the dawet ice stall, the majority of people already know his whereabouts.
How could it not be, Mbah Hari has been selling dawet ice every day since he was 12 years old at the north entrance of Beringharjo Market.
Surrounded by cloth sellers, Mbah Hari opened his stall from 09.00 to 15.00 WIB. A small bowl of Mbah Hari’s ice dawet contains cendol, green grass jelly or cao-cao, pieces of jackfruit, then doused with coconut milk and brown sugar water.
This dawet ice is very fresh when it passes through the esophagus, the feeling of thirst automatically decreases after holding it while walking around the market.
The sweet taste of the coconut sugar water and the savory taste of coconut milk make the dawet ice even more delicious. It seems, drinking a bowl is not enough.
Mbah Hari’s age is currently 73 years old. You can imagine how legendary Mbah Hari’s dawet ice is, which is sold cheaply at a price of IDR 5,000.
- SEGO EMPAL BU WARNO
One of the legendary culinary menus at Beringharjo Market is Bu Warno’s sego empal. When ordering this menu, the seller will cut the meat according to the size and fry it.
This meat has previously been boiled for about 6 hours so that it is really tender. Boiling it is still conventional, namely using a wood stove. Then let stand overnight so that the seasoning is perfectly absorbed.
After frying, the seller will put the meat on a plate with the rice. We can add soy sauce and chili sauce so that the taste of sego empal is even more delicious. This menu is quite simple, but therein lies the enjoyment.
Warung Sego Empal Bu Warno is located south of the parking lot on the 2nd floor of Pasar Beringharjo, open from 08.00 to 15.00 WIB. A portion of empal is priced at IDR 19,000.
In addition to sego empal, this shop also sells fried iso tripe, offal, pulmonary peyek, and various beef preparations.
- GADO-GADO BU HADI
Gado-gado (hodgepodge) Bu Hadi is a legendary shop in Beringharjo Market. The hodgepodge menu is the mainstay of this shop. Inside the hodgepodge, there are kupat, bean sprouts, cucumber, cabbage, boiled potatoes, tofu, 1 boiled egg, and all of these ingredients are poured with peanut sauce which is mixed with the spices themselves. As a complement, there is a bowl of prawn crackers with a rectangular shape and melinjo chips.
You can order a menu that is also a mainstay at Bu Hadi’s hodgepodge shop, namely kopyor ice.
Kopyor is a coconut whose flesh is not attached to the shell but is mixed with coconut water. Drinking ice kopyor after eating the hodgepodge is the right combination because this drink is very refreshing. Bu Hadi’s Gado-gado stall is open from 08.00 am to 3.00 pm.
One portion of the Gado-Gado costs IDR 15,000, while a glass of ice kopyor costs IDR 11,000. Apart from the hodgepodge, there are other menus such as lotek, kupat tofu, and ketoprak.
- SOTO PITHES MBAH GALAK
Don’t be afraid if you go to this shop, you won’t be scolded by the seller. The seller will actually welcome you politely. In this shop, you can choose beef or chicken soup. Maybe you were confused about why this one culinary has the name Soto Pithes. It is called that because if you order spicy soup, the seller will take the devil’s chili, then crush it until the contents come out and put it on the lip of the bowl.
The spicy taste of the devil’s chilies is very pronounced, plus the savory soup of the hot soup, making this one culinary taste even more delicious and fresh. FYI You won’t find chili sauce in this warung. As a complement, you can take crackers, peyek, and tempeh chips, each of which is put in a large glass jar. If it’s still incomplete, you can also add fried tempeh to the soup.
Then the name ‘Mbah Galak’ was pinned in this shop because the first seller was very fierce. However, now the Soto Pithes shop is in the hands of the third generation.
- SATE KERE
On the side of the road south of Beringharjo Market, there are usually lines of kere satay sellers. Puffs of smoke and the aroma of satay grilled on charcoal fire can whet your appetite.
Kere satay is made from lard or beef fat with spices and soy sauce. When you eat satay kere there is a chewy sensation in your mouth. The savory taste and tends to be sweet will spread on the tongue when chewing this satay. Kere satay is delicious, but for those of you who suffer from cholesterol, don’t eat a lot of it. If you don’t want too much satay, you can also add this satay using kupat.
This kere satay is usually open from 08.00 am to 03.30 pm.
In addition to providing lard satay, there are also beef satay and beef liver satay. The price is IDR 3,000 for the satay lard, while for the meat or liver satay, it is IDR 4,000. - NOODLE PENTIL BU MARZUKI
This one culinary is much sought after by buyers. Apart from the fact that people are curious about this snack, it is also because there is only one seller at Beringharjo Market, namely Mrs. Marzuki. Moreover, the noodles sold by this middle-aged woman are not too many.
Noodle pentil is made from cassava starch or we usually call tapioca flour. The noodles are yellow and white. The chewy texture of a valve is what makes it called noodle nipples. There are no vegetables such as cabbage or carrots in this noodle, even cooking it is only given seasonings in the form of garlic, candlenut, and onions. When it will be wrapped in banana leaves and paper, it will be sprinkled with chunks of celery and fried onions, as well as spicy raw chili sauce. One package costs IDR 5,000.
However, if you want to buy more for IDR 7,500 or IDR 10,000, one package is still served. To buy this noodle try to come in the morning. If not, you might be disappointed that you ran out. Bakmi Pentil Bu Marzuki can be found at the south entrance of the Beringharjo Market.
- PUYUH BACEM BIRDS
In Yogyakarta, the baceman menu is very popular, such as tofu and soybean cake bacem. There are also other baceman menus that are easily found at Beringharjo Market, namely quail or gemak bacem.
So far, maybe we are only familiar with quail eggs, but these tiny birds are also delicious to eat. When entering Beringharjo Market from the south door, one of the bacem quail sellers that we can find is Mrs. Marzuki who also sells noodle noodles. Apart from bacem, Bu Marzuki also sells salted quail. Usually, this salty quail can be fried again at home. One large of Bacem quail costs IDR 10,000, – the small one is IDR 7,500, – while the salty one is IDR 8,000.
