Papua is the most eastern part of Indonesia. It is extremely rich in culture and natural resources. You can see this through their food. Their cuisines are tightly woven with their surrounding nature.
The tourist will see that most of their food contains sago from the sago trees that are grown all over the region.
Bagea cake is small and tough. This food is a pastry made from sago starch and of course, this food is a snack from Ternate, North Maluku. Bagea cake has a shape resembling a tree trunk which is cut into pieces and is yellowish-white because it is mixed with walnuts.
What makes it traditional to Papua is the sago and the walnut. The taste of this cake is like no other.
The cake is quite hard so if you’re not accustomed to eating it, you might struggle a bit. There’s a hint of cinnamon and clove in its flavor.
The manufacturing method is not too difficult.
- Just beat the chicken eggs and sugar until thick,
- Add cinnamon, cloves, peanuts, and walnuts.
- When it is mixed, it can be shaped into a round shape
- Baked.
The combination of all the ingredients creates a slightly harsh texture, but the taste can be addicting. People often eat this with tea or coffee.
Bagea cake is often packed in dried leaves. However, they also come in boxes so that people can take them home as souvenirs.
