A video showing the handling of cattle from Australia being slaughtered at two slaughterhouses in Indonesia is back in the spotlight in Australia.
An NGO called Animals Australia has sent a letter of protest to the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water, and Environment (DAWE), last Friday.
The letter also includes a video recording of the inhumane slaughter of animals carried out at the licensed slaughterhouse in Aceh.
According to Animals Australia, the recording took place during the slaughter of animals during Eid al-Adha, 30 July.
To ABC, Animals Australia CEO Glenys Oogjes said the slaughter procedure was “ very worrying ”, as it was revealed in 2011.
Even though now there is a monitoring system created by the Australian Department of Agriculture, called the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS), after the export ban on livestock to Indonesia in 2011.
But Animals Australia refused to provide the ABC with the tapes of the slaughter procedure.
Several livestock exporters have watched the footage and one company has temporarily stopped sending cattle to the problematic facility, said the Australian Animal Export Council (ALEC).
Australian Animal Exporters Council executive director Mark Harvey-Sutton acknowledged the footage was ‘stressful’ to viewers and showed the animals originating from Australia being tied up with a rope and then having their throats slit without being killed by previous electric shocks.
According to Mark, several videos and a large number of photos taken between July 30 and August 5 show the presence of 10 cattle at the facility.
