Recently, the city government of Shenzhen, China, reported traces of the Coronavirus in imported frozen packaging.
This time the Coronavirus was detected on packaged frozen chicken (chicken wings) imported from Brazil.
The Chinese Center for Disease Control is also testing samples taken from the surface of frozen chicken wings as part of routine checks on imported seafood, food, and meat products.
Inspections of imported food ingredients have also been carried out since last June when the Coronavirus outbreak was discovered at the Xinfadi seafood market in Beijing.
Apart from chicken wings contaminated with the Corona virus, here are some imported foods contaminated by the Corona virus, quoted from various sources.
1. Salmon
The outbreak of the Corona COVID-19 virus that broke out in Beijing, China, gave rise to speculation about salmon some time ago.
Local health officials investigated and found traces of the virus on the cutting boards of imported salmon hawkers at the Xinfadi market that are suspected of being the new cluster of Corona outbreaks in Beijing.
This has led to all supermarkets in Beijing removing salmon from their shelves.
Traders in China have temporarily stopped importing salmon.
Even so, Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it was still uncertain whether the Corona COVID-19 virus actually originated from salmon.
Because it is very unlikely that fish is a source of Corona transmission.
2. Frozen shrimp
The Chinese government found the Coronavirus in imported frozen shrimp packaging.
Bi Kexin, the Director General of the Food Safety Bureau for Import and Export under the General Administration of Customs of China, said his party found six samples exposed to the Corona virus out of 223,000 samples tested on imported frozen food.
Quoted from the South China Morning Post page, sampling was carried out as a precautionary measure after the emergence of COVID-19 cases in Beijing originating from the food market.
Bi Kexin said in the latest case the virus was found on the outside of frozen shrimp food packaging from three Ecuadorian companies.
While the content itself when tested gave negative results.
“The results show that containers and packaging from these companies are at risk of being contaminated with the Coronavirus.”
“Experts say this does not mean that these foods can transmit the virus, but shows that food safety management is not ideal,” said Bi Kexin.
3. Frozen seafood
Authorities in China found the Corona COVID-19 virus on the packaging of imported frozen seafood coming from the port city of Dalian.
The Corona COVID-19 virus was found on the outer packaging of frozen seafood purchased by three companies in Yantai, in eastern Shandong Province.
Quoted from CNA, the Yantai city government said that the seafood came from imported shipments that had stopped at the port of Dalian.
However, there was no further mention of the origin of the shipment.
The Chinese authorities have also closed these items. Everyone who handled the frozen food product is currently under quarantine and they have tested negative for COVID-19.
