The Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, said that the Palestinian people are not worried about the agreement to normalize relations between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel.
Abbas called the deal “nonsense”.
As reported by Reuters on Wednesday (19 August 2020), Abbas made this statement in the first public statement since the peace agreement between the UAE and Israel was announced last week.
In his comments, Abbas accused the UAE of neglecting Palestinians living under Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.
However, Abbas stated that the Palestinian people were not at all worried about the agreement that was reached by being mediated by the United States (US).
Previously, on Thursday (12 August) last week, the UAE and Israel agreed to normalize diplomatic relations.
This triggered the anger of Palestinians who have long sought the support of the Gulf states in their efforts to create a Palestinian state.
The UAE argues that the deal helps stop Israel’s plans to annex the West Bank.
In the agreement, Israel has indeed agreed to suspend its planned annexation of the West Bank.
It was even agreed that Israel must get US approval to realize the annexation.
The US itself has said it will not give approval for a “time” in order to focus on implementing the agreement.
