The video was shared by a number of accounts with a similar narrative.
It is narrated that the man married the younger brother of his first wife.
Suddenly the video went viral and became controversial because it was considered to have violated the provisions of Islamic law which prohibits a man from marrying two women who are blood-related at the same time.
In the video circulating, it appears that a wife is sitting next to the prospective second wife who is dressed the same.
The first wife then asked to make sure her husband could do justice when he married the second wife.
“Promised that you would be fair in the future? Promised that you would accept mothers and sisters, children, and so on,” asked the first wife.
“God willing,” replied the husband. The two then hugged.
After that, the first wife embraced the future second wife.
She then stated that she allowed her husband to practice polygamy.
“With this I allow my younger brother (to mention the name of the woman) to become the second wife of my husband,” he said.
Netizen questioned the ‘younger brother’ from the first wife to the second wife.
A number of parties then asked the Ministry of Religion (Kemenag).
The community asked the Directorate General of Islamic Community Guidance regarding the involvement of KUA officers in the marriage.
The Directorate of Bina KUA and Sakinah Family then did a search.
As a result, the Ministry of Religion stated that the marriage took place on Friday (14 August) at the KUA Mataram, NTB, and was carried out according to regulations.
“As for the ‘younger brother’ call in the video, it may be a close call,” said the Head of Sub-Directorate for Quality, Infrastructure, and Information Systems of KUA Anwar Saadi in a written statement, Wednesday (26 August 2020).
He stated that the provisions regarding polygamy are regulated with fairly strict conditions in the Regulation of the Minister of Religion (PMA) Number 20 of 2019.
One of them is that the applicant must have a polygamy license issued by the Religious Court.
