A restaurant in Shanxi, China collapsed.
As a result, 29 people died because of falling debris.
The two-story restaurant building in the Xiangfen area collapsed on Saturday (Aug 29).
The building collapsed when an 80th birthday party was celebrated at the restaurant.
According to the Xinhua news agency, at least 57 people have been rescued from the rubble.
Dozens of people were reportedly injured and 7 people seriously injured. The rescue operation itself ended early this morning.
Until now, the exact cause of the collapsed restaurant is not yet known.
The Chinese government’s State Council said it would oversee the investigation by local authorities.
From the footage broadcast on the CGTN website, the roof of the restaurant collapsed.
Evacuation officers were seen using equipment to lift debris.
Seven hundred people were involved in the rescue operation.
Earlier in March 2020, a hotel collapsed in the southern Chinese city of Quanzhou. The incident killed 29 people and injured 42 others.
