For the first time in Belarus, supporters of LGBTQ rights and thousands of women appeared with rainbow flags to calling for the resignation of President Alexander Lukashenko.
And also, hundreds of university students demonstrated against the detention of classmates after a wave of protests gripping that country in Minsk on Saturday. Hundreds of the students formed human chains at the State Linguistics University.
Anna Bredova, one of the rainbow flag bearers, told as cited News24xx.com from the Associated Press news agency, “We are tired of living in a dictatorship where we simply didn’t exist. And we are calling for freedom.”
This act was the first time in the women’s march and an indication that opponents of Lukashenko are becoming bolder. And from data of the human rights organization Viasna, at least 5,000 women took part in the march.
As information, same-sex activity was legalized in Belarus since 1994. But the authorities of Belarus have not allowed any LGBTQ organization legal registry.
Protests took place after some previous elections that Lukashenko won. Estimated at more than 100,000 people joined with the protests.
