Saudi Arabian authorities have arrested the famous cleric and reciter, Sheikh Abdullah Basfar.
Recently, Saudi Arabia has indeed been aggressively arresting scholars, journalists and activists. Why?
As reported by Middle East Monitor (MEMO), Tuesday (8 September) the Prisoners of Conscience Twitter account said Sheikh Basfar was arrested last August, without providing further details about how and where he was arrested.
Basfar is a professor in the department of Sharia and Islamic Studies at King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah.
He is also the former Secretary General of the World Organization of the Book and Sunnah.
The reports of Sheikh Basfar’s detention coincide with reports of the detention of Sheikh Saud Al-Funaisan, who was arrested in March.
Al-Funaisan is a university professor and former dean of the Sharia faculty at Al-Imam University in Riyadh.
Based on a growing issue in Saudi society, the cleric’s arrest was linked to criticism of the son of the crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS).
