A Pakistani court on Tuesday sentenced a man to death.
The man was convicted of sending a text message containing blasphemy.
Reported by AFP on Wednesday (9 September 2020), the man named Asif Pervaiz, 37.
He had previously been detained in 2013 for fighting blasphemy charges brought against him by the supervisor of the factory where he worked.
Pervaiz Saif-ul-Malook’s lawyer told AFP that Pervaiz has denied all charges against him.
It will also forward the text message in question.
“This case should be dropped by the judge,” said Malook, adding he would appeal the verdict to the Lahore High Court.
Pervaiz claimed his superior, for having forced him to convert to Islam.
His boss also accused him of blasphemy when he quit his factory job.
Blasphemy is a very sensitive issue in Pakistan where the law can punish anyone who is deemed to have insulted Islam or a Muslim figure.
Up to 80 people are known to be jailed in Pakistan on these charges.
