About 50 people were reported killed in a landslide at a gold mine in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The mining area was landslide due to heavy rains.
As reported by AFP on Saturday (12 September 2020) the accident at the emergency gold mine occurred on Friday (11 September) in the town of Kamituga, in South Kivu province, about 270 kilometers southwest of the regional capital Bukavu.
However, the Mayor of Kamituga, Alexandre Bundya, said “we cannot confirm the exact number” of victims.
So far no bodies have been found, he said, adding that “19 families have come looking for their relatives”.
A local resident at the scene, Jean Nondo Mukambilwa, told AFP so far only one body had been found.
