The spokesperson of the COVID-19 handling task force, Professor Wiku Adisasmito said that the use of scuba masks may be less effective to protect against the coronavirus.
And the same idea also told by Dr Muhammad Fajri Adda’i, the clinical practitioner and COVID-19 pandemic volunteer.
He said on Friday said that this type of mask only consists of a single layer, “Scuba masks are too thin and only consist of one layer which is not effective because it is made out of elastic neoprene. Its pores can enlarge. What we need is the mask’s filtration ability.”
Scuba or face masks are made from a single layer. It’s too thin and may not be effective to filter viruses from being inhaled by its users.
As the effective filters, Adda’i recommended four-layer silk masks followed by chiffon, which is made out of 90 per cent polyester and 10 per cent spandex.
“There are also flannels made out of 65 per cent cotton and 35 per cent polyester. Or the use of a three-layered face mask, with each layer acting as a filtration tool, absorbent, and an outer polyester layer. Its recommendation comes in line with the World Health Organization’s recommendation.”
So, for those who have already bought a scuba mask, you should add layers to the outside of the scuba with materials that are more effective in filtering germs and viruses.
