The government of India has passed new bills that will make the farmers more easier to sell their produce directly to big buyers.
One of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s senior cabinet ministers, Rajnath Singh said, “The passage of both the bills in parliament is indeed a landmark day for Indian agriculture, despite there are some protest from opposition parties about this bills.”
One of the Congress leader named Rahul Gandhi said that Modi is making farmers ‘slaves’ of the capitalists.
He also said that Modi will allow never the farmers to sell to institutional buyers and large retailers such as Walmart.
But Modi’s Minister of Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who comes from an alliance party, resigned on Thursday in protest, calling the bills “anti-farmer”.
Badal believes the bills will increase farmers suffering and will destroy wholesale markets that ensure fair and timely payments to farmers and weaken the state’s farmers and the overall state economy.
As information, farmers in India accounting for a third of India’s gross domestic product, farmers now account for only 15 percent of the country’s $2.9 trillion economy.
According to India’s National Crime Records Bureau, more than half of India’s farmers are in debt, with 20,638 killing themselves in 2018 and 2019.
