Amazing, a 33-year-old bank branch manager named Kevin Kinard found a 9.07-carat diamond at Arkansas’s Crater of Diamonds State Park.
The diamond becomes the second-largest in history discovered at the site.
Arkansas State Parks is the 37.5-acre diamond search area.
A relatively frequent visitor of the park since childhood, Kinard made that discovery on Labor Day.
Kinard said, “Anything that looked like a crystal, I picked it up and put it in my bag.”
Hours of searching later, Kinard headed to the park’s Diamond Discovery Center, where visitors can get their finds identified and registered.
But he not believing he’d found anything of worth, what ended up being identified as the massive diamond.
Kinard nearly didn’t get his haul checked but then changed his mind when a friend got hers checked, then was brought into the office for closer examination.
Kinard headed back to Crater of Diamonds on Wednesday to tell his successful tale.
The Crater of Diamonds became an Arkansas state park back in 1972, and in 1975, its largest diamond yet was found: a 16.37-carat white Amarillo Starlight.
