Did you know that women who are menstruating are prohibited from entering the area on Komodo Island, Indonesia?
Indonesian zoologist Evy Ayu Arida said that women who are menstruating will attract the attention of Komodo Dragons and it can be dangerous.
“Don’t try it…” she said.
Evy explained that Komodo dragons are able to smell blood (including the menstrual blood) within a 9.6-kilometer radius.
The smell of blood will attract animals and it can be dangerous if not careful.
Even more worrying, Evy said, if someone was attacked by a Komodo dragon, the bite could be dangerous.
A study conducted in 2009 stated that a dragon bite can inject poison into the victim’s body through the poison glands found in the lower jaw.
The myth says that animal saliva is the cause of death for victims because it contains thousands of bacteria that cause infection.
Evy told the Komodo dragon that was not an aggressive animal. Even they can smell blood, it doesn’t mean it will continue to attack its prey.
Although capable of running up to 20 kilometers/hour, the Komodo dragon does not like to chase its prey. It prefers to set traps to get food.
After successfully capturing the victim, it will not eat it but instead, let it become a carcass first.
“So it is not surprising that Komodo dragons are attracted by the smell of fresh blood, including menstrual blood,” she said.
