Five people were killed and three others injured when a homemade bomb exploded in eastern Algeria on Thursday, January 14, 2021.
According to the Defense Ministry, the victims were inside their vehicle when the explosion occurred in Tebessa province, about 573 km from the capital, Algiers.
Violence in the North African country has become rarer since authorities ended a war in the 1990s with armed extremist groups in a conflict that claimed 200,000 lives.
However, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and small groups allied with ISIS operate in remote areas of the country.
