A number of multi-storey buildings in the city of Mamuju, West Sulawesi Province, collapsed due to the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred on Friday, 02.28 am, local time.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 4 kilometers northeast of Majene Regency, West Sulawesi. However, the tremors were felt in Mamuju, Makassar to Palu.
One Mamuju resident admitted that he chose to temporarily evacuate to a high place.
“We’ve all run to the mountains because the three-story building in our neighborhood has collapsed to the ground, the people are afraid of a tsunami,” said Yahya, a resident of the Kasiwa neighborhood, a densely populated area of Mamuju City.
Until now, it is not certain how many buildings collapsed and were damaged by the 6.2 magnitude earthquake. The number of victims is still unknown.
Previously, an earthquake rocked the Majene area, West Sulawesi on Friday morning (15/1). The earthquake occurred at around 01.28 am, local time or 2.28 am.
