On the 72nd Republic Day celebration, the Shaurya Chakra was awarded posthumously to Major Anuj Sood, who lost his life in an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir in May 2020.
Major (Late) Anuj Sood was born in Bangalore, Karnataka on 17 Dec 1989. He was a second generation army officer.
He joined the prestigious National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla in May 2008 and was commissioned from the Indian Military Academy Dehradun on June 9, 2012.
After commissioning, he joined 19th Battalion of Brigade of The Guards in Counter Insurgency (Operations) environment and performed regimental duties in appointments like Adjutant and Platoon Commander.
Eventually, the officer was posted to 21 Rashtriya Rifles (GUARDS) in an intense Counter Insurgency (Operations) environment on 04 March 2018. He was known to be highly motivated and inspired confidence in his command as a Company Commander.
The officer handled the situation post the abrogation of Article 370 with immense maturity and steadfastness wherein he played a stellar role in keeping the volatile situation under control in his Area of Responsibility.
On May 2, 2020 Major (Late) Anuj Sood was leading the men of his Company during ‘Operation chanjimula’. During the operation the officer laid the cordon at the suspected house with his Combat Action Team.
Without thinking twice about putting his life on the line, he went into the house with the Commanding Officer and three other individuals to rescue civilians held hostage by the terrorists.
In the firefight that ensued with terrorists, the gallant officer showcased utmost grid, valour and bravery and made the supreme sacrifice by laying down his life but not before harming the terrorists.
The officer was laid to rest at Panchkula with complete military honours. He is survived by Myra Aakriti Singh Sood, his wife. The country will proudly recall his ultimate immemorial sacrifice for centuries to come.
His sacrifice has been paid honour to by him being awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously.
