The Balinese Day of Silence is a unique tradition to celebrate the Saka new year.
It is a time when everyone on the island is expected to respect the sacred practice and stay inside to use the occasion for self-reflection.
So, don’t forget to take out some cash soon, folks, as ATMs in Bali are set to go offline starting tomorrow afternoon for the occasion of Nyepi, or Day of Silence, which falls on Sunday.
“To celebrate the holy day of Nyepi that falls on March 14, among some other things is the turning off of ATM machines in Bali,” Trisno Nugroho, a representative from Bank Indonesia in the province, said yesterday, as quoted by state news agency Antara.
Starting noon tomorrow, ATM machines across the province will be switched off gradually, and will return to normal at 7 am on Monday.
But, don’t worry too much if you’ve got some last-minute payments or transfers to do, as mobile banking or internet banking will still operate normally as long as you can get connected onto the world wide web.
While cellular data will be off for the sacred day, you can still text and call and connect to Wi-Fi to go online.
