Using a tool such as a small shovel, Alfedri began digging the ground to remove the Porang planted by Sahnan, a resident of Benteng Hulu Village, Mempura, about six months ago.
The members of the farmer group helped to lift and clean the Porang harvested by the Siak Regent. After weighing it, it turned out that he weighed almost 5 kilograms.
Regent Alfedri said that the Porang plant is more profitable than oil palm.
“In a rough calculation, if one hectare can produce 24 tons, and multiplied by the price of Rp. 6,000 / kilogram, that’s not bad,” he explained.
The Porang plant has a high commodity value so that it becomes material for export abroad.
“This can make Porang a superior product in one village, one village one product,” he said.
Currently, the Regent continued, hundreds of thousands of Porang farmers are waiting for the harvest period, located in six sub-districts.
Chairman of the DPW Porang Nusantara (P3N) Farmer Activist (P3N) Deny Welianto hopes that Siak Regency will become one of the Porang commodity centers in Riau because Siak has the potential for that.
Siak has quite large peatlands.
“I developed Porang on peatlands, and thank God the growth and results achieved are very good,” he said.
He explained that peatlands have a large enough water deposit, then peatlands have a high nitrogen content and are needed by Porang plants.
The price of Porang seed is around IDR 300 – 400 thousand and the price of Porang is Rp. 6,000 – 8,000 for one kilogram.
If the public is interested, they can buy it at the P3N DPD located in the Tualang sub-district, or at PAC Mempura, Siak, Kandis, and Koto Gasib.
